れ and レ

Pronunciation

These characters represent a blend between the “Le” sound in “Leg” and the “De” sound in “Dead”.

Despite usually being written as "RE" in roman characters.

Our 7/11 employee is back for the hiragana れ. This time, he’s using his LEG to play with a soccer ball, while working at the れgister. Sorry.. LE… Register.

レ Memorization Story

The katakana レ is a rake in a lake.

The left side of the hiragana れ is identical to the one in ね, so we’ll write that the same. Instead of looping back in at the end though, we come straight down and then curve out to the right.

The katakana レ is identical to the right side of ル.
